Keshequa Central School is a rural district predominantly in southern Livingston County.  Our district also goes into Allegany and Wyoming counties.  The district covers 117 square miles of rolling hills and valleys.  Our elementary campus (pre-k through 4) is located in Dalton while the middle school/high school (5-12) is located in Nunda.

Position Type: Part-Time / Seasonal (Follows School District Calendar)

Shift: Morning and Afternoon Routes (Split Shift: approx. [7:00 AM – 10:30 AM] & [1:00 PM – 4:30 PM])

Position Overview

Keshequa CSD  is seeking a compassionate, detail-oriented 1:1 School Bus Nurse (LPN/RN) to provide direct medical supervision and personal care for a medically fragile student during daily school bus transportation. The individual in this role is responsible for ensuring the student’s safety, maintaining secure storage of required medications, and administering daily or emergency prescription medications in accordance with New York State regulations and the student’s Emergency Care Plan (ECP).

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct Care & Monitoring: Monitor vital signs, respiratory status, and general physical condition of a medically fragile student during transit to and from school.

  • Medication Housing & Administration: Securely carry, manage, and administer daily and/or rescue prescription medications that the student cannot self-administer, in accordance with physician orders, state law, and district medical protocols.

  • Emergency Response: Provide immediate emergency medical intervention according to the student’s Individualized Healthcare Plan (IHP) or Emergency Care Plan (ECP), including airway management or emergency medication delivery if required.

  • Safe Handling & Documentation: Maintain accurate Medication Administration Records (MAR) and log all observations or events occurring during transport.

  • Collaboration: Communicate effectively with parent/guardians, school nursing staff, bus drivers, and special education teams regarding student health status.

Qualifications & Credentials Required

Because this position requires housing and administering prescription medication to a non-self-directed student, candidates must hold active state medical credentials as mandated by NYS Education Law:

1. Required Professional Licensure

  • Active, unencumbered license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of New York.

2. Certifications

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR/AED for Healthcare Providers certification.

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification preferred.

3. Mandatory NYS School Transportation Credentials

Candidates must satisfy all NYS Department of Education (NYSED) school bus attendant safety and background requirements (8 NYCRR § 156.3):

  • Pass a pre-employment physical examination and drug screen.

  • Clearance under NYS Education Department Fingerprint & Criminal History Background Check.

  • Completion of NYS 3-Hour School Bus Attendant Physical Performance Test & Safety Training (or ability to complete upon hire).

  • Must be at least 19 years of age.

Preferred Experience

  • Minimum 1 year of pediatric, home health, or special education nursing experience.

  • Familiarity with caring for students with complex physical, neurological, or respiratory needs.
