The district is situated between the beautiful Letchworth and Stony Brook State parks. There are two  campuses, the Dalton Campus has one elementary (grades Prek-4), and the Nunda Campus has one middle school (grades 5-8) and one high school (grades 9-12). 

Position Overview:

The Middle and High School Reading/Literacy Specialist supports literacy development for students in grades 5-12 by utilizing data-driven instruction, research-based best practices, and individualized intervention strategies. The specialist collaborates with teachers, administrators, and support staff to enhance student reading achievement through goal setting, progress monitoring, and targeted interventions.

Key Responsibilities:

Data-Driven Instruction & Progress Monitoring:

  • Analyze student literacy data from multiple sources to identify reading deficiencies and inform instruction.

  • Develop individualized reading intervention plans based on assessment data and research-based instructional strategies.

  • Utilize MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports)  to provide tiered support and monitor student progress.

  • Implement and oversee progress monitoring tools to track student growth and adjust interventions accordingly.

  • Maintain and analyze student performance data to evaluate program effectiveness and report findings to stakeholders.

Research-Based Best Practices & Instructional Support:

  • Implement evidence-based literacy interventions.

  • Provide direct instruction to students in small-group and one-on-one settings to improve phonemic awareness, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary skills.

  • Support content-area teachers in integrating literacy strategies across disciplines to enhance reading comprehension and writing proficiency.

  • Guide teachers in implementing disciplinary literacy strategies and differentiated instruction to meet diverse student needs.

  • Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, instructional strategies, and ways to support reading development at home.

  • Participate in Student Support Teams (SSTs), IEP meetings, and 504 plan development to ensure appropriate accommodations and services for students with reading challenges.

 

Job Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree 

  • Valid NYS certification in Literacy or Reading ( 5-12).

  • Demonstrated experience working with middle and high school students in literacy instruction and intervention.

  • Proficiency in administering and interpreting reading assessments and using data to drive instruction.

  • Experience with research-based reading interventions and instructional strategies for struggling readers.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working within an MTSS/RTI framework to support student learning.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, data-driven instructional environment.

This position plays a crucial role in improving literacy outcomes for middle and high school students through a systematic, data-informed approach to reading instruction.
